Acid Reflux / GERD Disease
Acid reflux also known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common disease and according to the statistic in 2012, 7 million people in the USA had acid reflux symptoms. These symptoms can come and go, but there are people suffering from chronic acid reflux or GERD. This disease is common and in fact the number of people being reported to have GERD symptoms is increasing every year.
Millions of People Suffer From Acid Reflux Disease
In 2005 around three million American residents were hospitalized and diagnosed with GERD. The number of incidents increased even in infants and teenagers with 42 and 84 percent, respectively. There are reported deaths related to primary diagnosis of GERD.
Barrett’s Esophagus a Serious Complication of GERD
For white Caucasian men it is common to have condition known as Barrett’s esophagus. This is a very serious condition and 10 percent of the people that have chronic acid reflux symptoms or GERD can develop this disease. GERD disease attacks the esophagus and changes the tissue of the tube that delivers food from the mouth to the stomach. GERD disease can lead to cancer of the esophagus but the odds for that are below 1 percent. Most of the people suffering with acid reflux will never develop Barrett’s disease and even if they are diagnosed with this the doctor will monitor the situation and check for any cancer development.
Why I have Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux most likely to happen because of weak esophageal sphincter. When we eat or drink, the food goes through the tube and enters into the stomach. At the entrance of the stomach there is valve that open when food/drink comes in, and close when there is no food in the pipe . This muscle valve is known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES). But because of the week sphincter the acid moves up into the esophagus and people have the symptoms of GERD or acid reflux.

People that have acid reflux they need to monitor the number of occurrences in single week. If the number of repetition is greater than two then the patients will most likely have GERD disease
Risk Factors of GERD/Acid Reflux
There are a lot of factors that contribute for developing of GERD or Acid reflux disease. One of the most common factor is Helicobacter Pylori or bacterial infection that attacks your stomach lining. I have written an article about Helicobacter Pylori and its devastating consequences if you have it. This bacteria infection can lead to development of stomach ulcers and heartburn/acid reflux as result.

Another factor for example is when people smoking and drinking. Those people have higher chances of developing these acid reflux because of its smoking or drinking habits. According to Doctor Howard Hamper obesity is very concerning factor that leads to GERD or Acid reflux disease. He added that this increase the chances of getting esophagus irritation or even cancer. Many of the studies showed that link between obesity and GERD is very strong and that trimming fat will improve heartburn or will ease the symptoms. The acid reflux or GERD symptoms are most likely to happen during pregnancy. Slow metabolism is result of the pregnancy hormone called progesterone. What this hormone does is that it can slow down the metabolism and by doing it slows down entire digestive system. When the baby grows it makes more pressure on the inside organs and that is why stomach acid runs up back into esophagus or food tube. Dry mouth can be one factor why we have acid reflux and the reason is so simple, our salivary glands are not working for number of reasons and we don’t produce enough saliva. The saliva is alkaline by nature and its purpose is to make the food more wet and digested. We know alkaline saliva lowers down acidity and when our mouth glands are not producing enough, then we have a problem. Reasons we don’t have proper saliva production can range from smoking to chemotherapy. Chewing gum is best to influence natural thing that mouth does and will provoke our glands to increase the saliva production. Another reason for acid reflux can be diabetes and again diabetes, overweight and acid reflux are interconnected. This means that people with diabetes are most likely overweight and GERD is more likely to happen in this individuals. Also another important point is that GERD can happen for the people that suffers from diabetes type 2 and the reason is most likely because of the nerve damage that these patients have. People that have hiatal hernia also suffers from GERD symptoms. The cause for hiatal hernia is not yet established but larger hiatal hernia will cause food to go back into esophagus and cause the GERD symptoms. There are other risk factors that cause GERD/ Acid reflux disease and they are:
2. Connective tissue disorder
3. Eating fast and large meals
4. Lay down while eating or right after eating
5. Eat before bedtime
6. Eat high acid foods or fatty foods
7. Long use of blood pressure medications, aspirin and ibuprofen

Medications for Acid Reflux/ GERD Doing More Harm To Our Stomach Than Good
Today there are few drugs that are prescribed generally for Acid Reflux and GERD. One of the most commonly prescribed medications for heartburn and acid reflux are PPIs or proton pump inhibitors together with H2 blockers.
Most of the doctors prescribe them as safe drugs and now you can buy them even as over the counter drugs. What they are doing is they are blocking the production of stomach acid and most of the people will love them because now the stomach acid is not going through weak LES sphincter and they will take them on daily basis. The doctors usually tell its patients that they can be used for long period with no major health risks. But this approach might be the worst decision you have ever made. There are many studies that show that prolonged use of this drugs can lead to bone fractures due to osteoporosis. Researchers have found that long-term use can have big effect on digestion because lot of important nutrients like iron, zinc, calcium and folid acid are not absorbed. And not only this, because the drugs tamper the ph balance in our stomach absorption of other nutrients may be affected too. Anyone that is on these drugs must take supplements to support normal function of their body.
Studies have shown that suppressing the stomach acid will not solve the acid reflux/ GERD problem but it might cause patient severe problems in future. One example is that normal stomach acid kills lot of harmful bacteria that enters our body through food consumption. There are different names of these PPIs medications like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Ranital and Osmoprazole but they have are designed to have the same effect.
